HOW MODERN HINDUISM DRIFTED FROM VYĀSADEVA’S THEISM.

Srila Vyasadeva is the literary incarnation of Lord Krishna and compiler of the 4 Vedas

THE ORIGINAL TEACHING OF SRILA VYĀSADEVA

The Vedic revelation given by Śrīla Vyāsadeva is centered on one conclusion…and The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam establishes this at the very outset:Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and all living beings are His eternal servants.“dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo ’tra paramo nirmatsarāṇāṁ satāṁ vedyam vāstavam atra vastu śivadaṁ tāpa-trayonmūlanam”

“Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhāgavata Purāṇa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries.” Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1.1.2

And further:
“kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam”
“All of the above-mentioned incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the plenary portions of the Lord, but Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the original Personality of Godhead. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists.”

HOW MODERN HINDUISM DRIFTED FROM VYĀSADEVA’S THEISM.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1.3.28

Kṛṣṇa declares His position in theBhagavad gītā As It Is:

“vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham”
“By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.”

Bhagavad gītā 15.15, 1972 edition
“mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya mayi sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva”
“O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.”
____________________________________________________________________________

Bhagavad gītā As It Is 7.7, 1972 edition
“ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate iti matvā bhajante māṁ budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ”
“I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me.
The wise who know this perfectly engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.”

Bhagavad gītā 10.8, 1972 edition
Thus the original conclusion of Vyāsadeva’s scriptures is not impersonalism, nor the idea that all gods are the same, but that Kṛṣṇa is the source of all expansions and devas.

THE RISE OF IMPERSONALISM AND SYNCRETISM.

After Kṛṣṇa’s disappearance from this world, Kali-yuga advanced. By 500 BCE, Buddhism spread widely, denying God and soul. Vedic knowledge was in danger to be lost…
In response, Lord Śiva incarnated as Śrīpāda Śaṅkarācārya around the 8th century CE to re-establish Vedic authority.

Śaṅkara’s method was to present the Absolute as impersonal Brahman, teaching that all forms including Kṛṣṇa are temporary manifestations of an impersonal truth.
His impersonal commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra overshadowed Vyāsadeva’s original Śrīmad Bhāgavatam.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu strongly condemned this deviation: He said:

“māyāvādi-bhāṣya śunile haya sarva-nāśa”
“If one hears the Māyāvāda philosophy, his spiritual life is ruined.”
Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 6.169

Thus, though Śaṅkara checked Buddhism, he also introduced confusion: treating all Devas as one and the same emanations of Brahman.

The Smārta Tradition and “All Gods are the Same”

After Śaṅkara, the Smārta system formalized pañcopāsanā, worship of five deities (Viṣṇu, Śiva, Śakti, Gaṇeśa, Sūrya) as equal forms of the impersonal Absolute.
This became widespread Hindu practice, teaching that all gods are one, or that all are merely aspects of Brahman.

Yet the Gītā refutes such relativism:

“antavat tu phalaṁ teṣāṁ tad bhavaty alpa-medhasām devān deva-yajo yānti mad-bhaktā yānti mām api”“Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.”
Bhagavad gītā 7.23, 1972 edition

Kṛṣṇa clearly distinguishes Himself from the devas. They are subordinate controllers, not equal to Him.

How Hinduism was formed

The word “Hindu” is not Vedic. Historically it never was…It was first used by Persians and Arabs to describe the people living beyond the Sindhu (Indus) River.
Later, under colonial rule, the British grouped together all Indian traditions Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva, Śākta, Smārta, tribal customs under the single category of Hinduism.

Thus Hinduism is not one philosophy, but a collection of often contradictory systems. Some are Vaiṣṇava and worship Kṛṣṇa or Viṣṇu as supreme. Others worship Śiva or Devī. Many follow Śaṅkara’s impersonalism. In practice, this produced the common modern belief that all gods are the same, a belief alien to Vyāsadeva’s original teaching.

The Restoration by Vaiṣṇava Ācāryas

In every age, the Lord empowers ācāryas to restore the true siddhānta. Madhvācārya, Rāmānuja, Viṣṇusvāmī, Nimbārka, and ultimately Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His followers reaffirmed that Kṛṣṇa is Svayam Bhagavān, the source of all.

“Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.1

So the bhāgavata-dharmam, bhagavān, kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam. But at the conclusion, Vyāsadeva says, ete cāṁśa-kalāḥ puṁsaḥ kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam [Kṛṣṇa, He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam.
Ete cāṁśa-kalāḥ puṁsaḥ kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam. So Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is accepted by all the ācāryas.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, my spiritual master carried this message worldwide:

Conclusion

The distinction is very clear.

Vyāsadeva’s revelation, in the Bhagavad gītā and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and all over the original Vedas is that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The devas are His empowered servants, never equal or one with Him.

Hinduism as it developed , influenced by Śaṅkara’s impersonalism, Smārta pañcopāsanā, and colonial classification, often blurs these distinctions and claims all gods are one.
This is a deviation from the original siddhānta and an artificial imposition of the Vedas by authors who injects the original texts of Vedic scripture withe Advaita opinions.

Therefore, the mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Srila Prabhupāda, and the guru-varga is to restore Vyasadevas pure teachings:

“man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru mām evaiṣyasi satyaṁ te pratijāne priyo ’si me”

“Always think of Me and become My devotee.
Worship Me and offer your homage unto Me.
Thus you will come to Me without fail.
I promise you this because you are My very dear friend.”
Bhagavad gītā 18.65, 1972 edition

Pure Vaiṣṇava siddhānta is Not “all gods are the same,”
But “Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Lord He is not impersonal and formless.
Bhakti to Him is the true religion of the soul ((Atma.)

As Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa has an eternal, spiritual form and performs eternal pastimes, we the living entities also have an original form, but in this world it is incomplete, imperfect, and temporary.
It does not mean that we are Bhagavān or can be Him.

The Kaṭha Upaniṣad declares:

“nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām eko bahūnāṁ yo vidadhāti kāmān”
among all eternal conscious beings, Kṛṣṇa is the one Supreme Eternal who maintains the rest (2.2.13).

And in Bhagavad gītā Kṛṣṇa says: “mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ”
“The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts” (15.7, 1972 edition).
Thus the jīva you and I are always the servants of Kṛṣṇa, never equal to Him.
